Tafsir of Surah Al-An'aam 6:6
﴿أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ مَّكَّنَّاهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَا لَمْ نُمَكِّن لَّكُمْ وَأَرْسَلْنَا السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْهِم مِّدْرَارًا وَجَعَلْنَا الْأَنْهَارَ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهِمْ فَأَهْلَكْنَاهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَأَنشَأْنَا مِن بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْنًا آخَرِينَ﴾
Translation of the meaning
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others.

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim
فذكر سبحانه إهلاك من قبلنا من القرون، وبين أن ذلك كان لمعنى القياس، وهو ذنوبهم، فهم الأصل ونحن الفرع، والذنوب العلة الجامعة، والحكم الهلاك؛ فهذا محض قياس العلة، وقد أكده سبحانه بضرب من الأولى، وهو أن من قبلنا كانوا أقوى منا فلم تدفع عنهم قوتهم وشدتهم ما حل بهم،«إعلام الموقعين عن رب العالمين» 1/104
